The Cradle Drumcircle Johannesburg
South Africa

There has been quite a substantial movement of Djembe drums into Southern Africa over the past 10 years and the popularity of drumming increased immensely filtering into suburbia and the corporate realms. There was a time when at certain festivals like Rustlers Valley one could hop onto a drumming workshop and experience the joys of group drumming, without owning a drum or having ever played one.

Then as the drums became more popular and accessible locally, workshops started popping up in the suburbs and more people started getting their own drums as they got exposed to this form of self expression. At the same time the concept of teambuilding with drums was introduced into the corporate world which steadily gained popularity introducing more and more people to the joys of drumming. Soon there were many drummers around who wanted to drum with others and the community drum circle was formed.

The community drum circle is not dominated by one person nore is it like a workshop but more free flow where everybody gets to contribute with the goal being to synergise and reach a state of group mind. You could say this is a more a jam session than a precise rhythmic articulation. This is a place where drummers and like minded people gather• People play improvised rhythms. Music is created in the moment.

In the Drumcircle, there is no audience. Everyone is part of the performance. You can always learn some new rhythms and every circle changes with different drummers from different cultures and backgrounds bringing their own rhythms.
You will also see people playing fire and Poi Didj and other interesting musical instruments

Fire A

Johannesburg's main drumcircle has been going for over 6 years and was originally held in Robert Bruce st Fourways hosted by Bj with many good memories. But then as a result of Neighborly complaints was moved to Riversands where we had some awesome sessions down in the forest but after a couple of moons it left Riversands for 1 last session at Robert Bruce st.

Dreams of Fire then became host and it moved on to White Shadow Lodge, Muldersdrift where Dreams of Fire was based at the time. With this change it saw the introduction of UV Decor and funky lighting. Lots of great memories were made there but After 18 moons it was once again forced to move as a result of noise intolerance by the Neighborhood. The time was right for change as what more appropriate place for it to move to than to the edge of the Cradle of Human Kind. Basecamp was the first venue, another beautiful piece of land with an open space and country feel in the muldersdrift area, where it continued to grow in popularity.Unfortunately it was lacking adequite facilities for the growth of it.

Then the time came to get a Newmoon circle going and another venue in the area - F & T was considered. The newmoon circle was born and got well supported and the venue being more suitable for the winter we decided to move the Fullmoon drumcircle there to. We had some good sessions there with healthy growth of supporters and a lighting and decor extravaganza unfolded unique to Dreams of Fire.
But soon with the growth of the circle to 240 people the venue fell short of Adequate facilities and safety issues were addressed on numerous occasions but ignored by management who were responsible for accommodating us and ensuring our well being and so we had to reconsider the location of the drumcircle. This sees the evolution of The cradle drumcircle once again now finally moving into the cradle where it belongs.

Come early for a beautiful sunset

So if you are looking for somewhere to go drumming?
A place where you can drum all night or just relax and socialize to the soul soothing rhythms of our heritage, this is the feel good place to be
- Stress relieving - grounding and lots of FUN -
so shake up them tribal roots of yours and come back to the cradle where it all began for some Beatty Earthy Rhythms every second Friday around Fullmoon & Newmoon

Drumming is known to be very therapeutic and if one follows the rhythms of nature like the moon cycle then you will know that the waxing period before fullmoon is the creation or manifestation time hence the growing larger of the moon to full. After that it is the waning time a period for release of old and out dated patterns and habits.

6. What is a Community Drum Circle?

by Arthur Hull

The Community Drum Circle is the use of a rhythm-based event as a tool for unity. It is NOT a drum class. It's NOT using culturally-specific rhythms. A community drum circle in the United States is a fun, family friendly event, where people empower each other in the act of celebrating community and life through rhythm and music. People of all levels of musical expertise come together and share their rhythmical spirit with what ever drums and percussion they bring to the event. They don't have to be a drummer to participate. Everyone has something to offer the circle, and any one is welcome.
The spirit and magic of rhythm expressed on drums and percussion instruments cuts through all ages, sexes, religions, races and cultures. "Rhythm", as Gabriel Roth says, "is the mother tongue." Rhythm is a universal language known to every one, even the youngest child, if we can just "remember." So in a very objective, yet beautiful way, an interactive rhythm event puts us all on an equal footing with each other and brings us closer together. The facilitator serves this process by guiding the participants to their highest musical potential.
A community drum circle is created, "in the moment" by all the people who participate. Co-operation and collaboration is the basic glue. When we drum together, sharing our spirit in the form of rhythm, it changes our relationships. As we play together, we give ourselves a rhythmical massage and an emotional release. The experience is unique to each person in the circle, and it happens whether we are entraining ourselves into the circle by drumming, or standing outside the circle and listening while tapping our feet and clapping along with the music.
There are many places where drum circles are being used for many purposes, like....
• Teambuilding for corporations
• Empowerment building for mens and womens groups
• Spirit building for spiritual growth and personal growth groups
• Synergizing and rhythm training for school/kids groups
• Stress and anger relief for kids- at-risk groups
• Orientation for college campuses and on-going circles for multi-cultural awareness.
• Family bonding for family night drum circles.
• Community building and market building for music stores.
To make beautiful music together, all we have to do is bring to the circle whatever rhythmical expertise we have to offer, along with the excitement of sharing it with other people. The quality of the music produced in an event like this is not based on the rhythmical expertise of the players, but on the quality of their relationship with the other people in the circle. The result is those magical musical moments where one powerful voice is created out of the many. In those moments, the players stop worrying about keeping time because time, as they know it, has stopped. In it's place is a living breathing entity, expressing timeless joy, passion and release through the power of rhythm. That is the beauty of a community drum circle.
